B12412: Computational Neuroscience and Neuroinformatics

Timetable Information for Module B12412 Spring Semester

S Coombes

Education Aims

To provide understanding in the use and development of computer models to simulate neuronal behaviour from the level of the single neuron to that of neuronal networks.
cortex

Learning Outcomes

To demonstrate and use computer models to investigate and simulate properties of neuronal behaviour from the level of the single neuron to that of neuronal networks

Students are strongly encouraged to download the software modelling package NEURON that will be used throughout this course. This is free, multi-platform, and has extensive supporting documentation and tutorials. Workshops will make extensive use of the tutorial and simulations package Neurons in Action (available in computer lab C77 and all University Campus Library PCs).

Will it ever happen that mathematicians will know enough of the subject of the physiology of the brain and that neurologists know enough of mathematical discovery for efficient cooperation to be possible?

-- Jacques Hadamard from his 1945 book The Psychology of Invention in the Mathematical Field.
