Thesis Title The influence of oscillatory correlation on the extremal properties of random processes
Thesis Abstract The extremal, smoothness and periodic behaviours exhibited by a random process have been shown to be substantially influenced by its autocorrelation function. This project will seek to discover those essential properties of the autocorrelation function that become manifested in the extremal properties of the process through analysing the intervals between its zero-crossings. A class of autocorrelation function with periodic properties will be examined in the first instance, the frequency of which provides a single parameter that takes the process from purely random to determinism. The statistics of the intervals between crossings, and ultimately their distribution, will be studied using numerical simulation, analysis and modelling. The results will be compared with physical data.
