Thesis Title Mathematical Image analysis of 4D X-Ray microtomography data for crack propagation in aluminum wire bonds in power electronics
Thesis Abstract In my thesis project we will use image processing methods in order to analyze X-ray micro tomography data of wire bonds. Wire bonds are important for energy conversion and they are a major components of most power electronic modules which are used in many applications such as for renewable energy generation. More specific we will be using various existing denoising algorithms in order to clean the noisy 2D tomography data as well as deblurring algorithms in order to eradicate the blurring effects in the 2D images of the wire bonds. Furthermore, we will apply segmentation algorithms in 2D images of wire bonds in order to study in more detail the regions that the defects occur. During this stage we hope to develop new mathematical imaging and data analysis methods, firstly for 2D tomography data in order to identify better the defects of the wire bonds. Future plans of the PhD project are to generalize the above methods to 3D X-ray micro tomography data as well as to develop 4D models in order to see how these deformations in the wire bonds occur and propagate over time.
