Thesis Title Mathematical modelling of nutrient and water uptake by plants
Thesis Abstract Mathematical modelling approaches will be used to predict the impact of root-architectural changes on root function, enabling selection of desired root phenotypes without impacting other important traits (e.g. nutrient uptake). Soil structure, composition and hydration determine the rate at which water can be drawn towards the root, with physical and chemical properties at the scale of soil particles or pores influencing transport at the whole-root level. Multiscale modelling techniques will be used to derive macroscopic (partial-differential-equation) transport equations for water and nutrients. These transport models will subsequently be coupled to ones for describing the development of root architecture to predict and better understand the implications of water and nutrient uptake efficiency.
