Thesis Title | Manifold valued data analysis of shapes and networks |

Thesis Abstract | Manifold-valued data analysis involves development and application of statistical methods for data that lie on non-Euclidean spaces. Two examples of such spaces that we will focus on are shape spaces (which arise when studying the geometry of objects modulo similarity transformations) and spaces of symmetric non-negative definite matrices (which arise as covariance matrices, and as representations of networks in terms of the graph Laplacian). Particular motivating applications include molecular dynamics data, which have a time-series structure and are typically challenging because the shape is so highly variable, and text corpora, in which the graph Laplacian is a natural way to represent units such as documents in a way that preserves information about pairwise word relationships. |
