Thesis Title Modelling growth factor activation via cell-ECM interactions
Thesis Abstract Bronchoconstriction (occurring due to airway smooth muscle contraction) is characteristic of respiratory diseases such as asthma. Experimental evidence currently suggests that bronchoconstriction triggers the activation of pro-remodelling growth factors that result in airway smooth muscle (ASM) growth. In this project we will couple sub-cellular models of mechano-transduction signalling pathways to biomechanical models of ASM cells and extra-cellular matrix proteins, aiming to develop a tissue-level biomechanical description of the airway. Contractile force transmission and the resulting growth factor activation will be studied through detailed models of cell-ECM and cell-cell adhesions, and these models will then be used to look for emergent biomechanical behavior at the tissue-level.
