Thesis Title System Identification and Estimation Aspects of Quatum Linear Systems
Thesis Abstract Quantum Statistics is an emerging and vibrant area of quantum physics. Physicists and mathematicians have long since been comfortable with the idea that quantum mechanics specifies the direct map from quantum states to probability distributions. Quantum statistics deals with the unfrequented inverse of this problem; estimation of an unknown state from the random outcomes of a quantum measurement. One of the most challenging aspects of this is certifying the result by performing a statistical reconstruction of the state from the quantum measurement data. However, whilst this challenge should not in any way be underestimated, the insight and knowledge which follows the proving of this result is invaluable; this exciting new field has opened the door to the preparation of new, exotic entangled quantum states used in many current quantum engineering experiments. The aim of the project is to investigate new statistical methods for the estimation of quantum states for large dimensional quantum systems, where standard methods fail.
