Thesis Abstract | A polynomial equation of degree n over a field k is always solvable in a suitable extension of k. There has been much research aimed at finding a corresponding result for groups. Thus if r(t) is in the free product G*<t> of a given group G and the infinite cyclic group generated by t can we find an overgroup H of G in which r(t)=1 has a solution? In this project we study the general case when the coefficients of r(t) are themselves in G*<t>. This allows us, for example, to consider equations over groups of arbritary length about which not much is known. |
