Thesis Title Hawking effect beyond Einstein: radiation from modified black holes
Thesis Abstract The project will analyse Hawking's prediction of black hole radiation for black holes whose geometry involves modifications to Einstein's gravitational theory. These modifications arise from attempts to explain the current cosmological observations and from our attempts to build theories of microscopic spacetime structure, bridging the largest and the smallest scales in our Universe. At the classical level, the aim is to clarify how the black hole horizons in Einstein's theory of gravity generalise to black holes in modified gravity, and how the modifications affect the characterisation of the black hole horizon as a one-way door for causal effects. This aim is in part motivated by the need to describe matter falling through the horizon of an astrophysical modified black hole, but in larger part by the role of the horizon as the region where Hawking radiation originates. At the quantum level, the aim is to develop a detailed description of how the Hawking effect in modified gravity black holes carries an imprint of the modifications, and how this imprint affects black hole thermodynamics. The results will constrain the theories of quantum spacetime from which the modifications may originate, informing hence the search for a quantum theory of gravity.
