Thesis Title Integrated whole system modelling and optimisation of city resource flow
Thesis Abstract Cities are complex (open, far from equilibrium, non linear) systems whose emergent structure and associated use of resources (energy, food, water, materials) depends on firms’ and individuals’ responses to endogenous and exogenous variables; including financial, technological, educational, regulatory and social. This project will develop a model of the resource flows in complex city systems to support the analysis and testing of strategies to minimize them, whilst maintaining necessary services. In this consideration will be given to analysis of the possible (system optimisation) and of the probable (likely uptake and impacts of improvement strategies), in consultation with relevant stakeholders.
