Thesis Title Statistical inference for stratified manifolds
Thesis Abstract Stratified manifolds are metric spaces consisting of strata of different dimensions that are "stuck together" in a suitable way. One type of stratified space is the so-called open book, in which pages can be thought of as two-dimensional strata and the spine, which connects the strata, can be thought of as a one-dimensional stratum. An important area of application of stratified spaces is to random tree structures, such as phylogenetic trees. Recently, novel central limit theorems with nonstandard features have been proved for Frechet means defined on certain types of stratified space. This project will aim to develop modern nonparametric methods of inference, such as bootstrap and empirical likelihood methods, for data from stratified manifolds and apply these methods to suitable real datasets.
