Mathematical modelling and Systems biology at Nottingham

The Centre for Mathematical Medicine and Biology (CMMB) comprises members of the University of Nottingham who use mathematics and statistics to provide insights into biomedical phenomena. We aim to promote the application of mathematical modelling to medicine and the biosciences, and to stimulate multi-disciplinary research within the University of Nottingham and elsewhere. The CMMB has an outstanding track record in developing robust collaborations with a range of biomedical scientists. Currently, more than ten postdoctoral researchers and over 30 research students work on a broad portfolio of collaborative projects, on topics such as neuroscience, gene networks, immunology, regenerative medicine (including stem cells), healthcare-associated infections and tumour growth. This broad range of activities means that CMMB members have expertise in, for example, multiscale modelling and simulation, statistical analysis of data and statistical modelling, physiological fluid dynamics, theoretical neuroscience, and cell signalling networks.

Notable activities that have contributed to CMMB's connectivity with biological scientists and its international profile include establishing the innovative Mathematics-in-Medicine Study Groups, running Summer Schools at the life sciences interface. CMMB also runs a single-site Marie Curie Early Stage Training Network in Mathematical Medicine and Biology (MMBNOTT). These activities are firmly embedded in a wider university research environment which fosters interdisciplinary research and in particular systems biology, exemplified by the vital role of CMMB members in the flagship Centre for Plant Integrative Biology (CPIB). The CMMB is also intensively involved in the University's Interdisciplinary Doctoral Training Centre for Integrative Biology, and CMMB members are engaged in research within the Centre for Healthcare Associated Infections (CHAI), the Sir Peter Mansfield Magnetic Resonance Centre (SPMMRC), the Brain and Body Centre, and the Wolfson Centre for Stem Cells, Tissue Engineering and Modelling (STEM).
